Good Lord you have no idea how much easier it is when you can actually see the shit you’re welding ;) the lower lens is what it looked like after cleaning.

That’s a big difference.

My buddy’s sister works for Lincoln Electric, and his sister won a MIG welder at their big employee picnic & family day. She turned around and gave it to him. He promptly had her order one of those fancy masks with the dimming glass using her employee discount as well. I’m ridiculously jelly.

Yeah I’ve had to turn the darkening up as it’s now not quite dark enough to protect my eyes properly on the setting it was on :S

Your buddy’s a jammy git. I’d stake your claim to the next MIG welder she wins ;)

My MIG throws so much slag my mask is peppered with marks from it. If I used it more often I’d be replacing lenses all the time.

I found it was less the little speckles of slag that were troublesome but more the fact that the whole thing was fogged. Honestly I could barely see through it when it was completely off the mask.

Is yours gas of gasless?

How do you clean that properly? Acid dip?

Gasless, just a £100 MIG amazon special.

Yeah that would be why it spatters so much. If you can swing it try getting gas. It’s so much better it’s not even comparable :)

Maybe some day I’ll upgrade, but I really only use it maybe once a month.

I figured as much. But they must have done it somehow in the days when that would have been too expensive.

Yeah absolutely. I think a strong polishing would do quite well. It’s the outer layer that’s fogged up (presumably from a reaction with some chemical), so polish off that layer and it should be ok.

Yeah, glass. Won’t get nearly as scuffed/pockmarked and is fairly easy to polish a flat piece.

OIC. Didn’t realise the fogging was actually the surface itself, not just a smeared layer on top.

Yeah I’d hoped it could be cleaned off but I think some spillage of some sort has denatured the surface of it. Honestly it’s a revelation being able to see what you’re pointing the torch at ;)
